Rihanna - Needed Me (Anti)

Remember Diamonds Rihanna? Or S&M Rihanna? Or We Found Love Rihanna? Yeah, never cared much for that Ri. But this, here, is like Bitch Better Have My Money Ri on a couple zans which results in just the perfect amount of 'boss bitch' for me. I mean, let's be honest - some people just couldn't handle BBHMM booming through speakers, especially after the release of that crafty video. And I feel the sentiment, but for a different reason. Sometimes I just can't take the endless Rihanna turn up. S&M was fun to listen to at the high school house parties, but how often do I want to sit around on my own and bump it? Never.

With production by none other than certified slapper, DJ Mustard, this track was guaranteed to be a jam. But what amazed me was the dark nature of the synths he incorporated. If someone had told me before listening that Mustard and Ri collabed, I'd assume just another club tune where Rihanna gets to use her vocals a bit over some upbeat sound with very little originality... glad I listened first. Of course, I can hear this in the club and go ham, and it appears as if Needed Me has become an anthem for independent, sex-positive women all over. But with Drake-like crooning and deep but simple lyrics, I find this to be a feel-good tune I can enjoy on my own and turn to for an often needed pick-me-up (I actually make sure to bump this a couple times daily).

I'm really appreciating Anti as a whole - Rihanna found her inner lethargic, stoner, slightly turned down 'bad bitch' and I couldn't be happier. I can call myself a true believer now because, well, fuck the pop shit sometimes. This album is deep: club track with Drake to follow two dreamy joints (one featuring the goddess, SZA)? Yes, please. And this track - Needed Me - is by far my favorite. What's better than hearing Queen Rihanna say, simply - "what did you think this was, love? No. I needed a fuck, and it was fun and all, but you've taken it too far - slow your role homeboy."? “Didn't they tell you that I was a savage?” No, Rihanna, but now I know. And boy do I fuck with you.

*Of course Rihanna's Anti is available to stream on Tidal... but fuck that; hop on Spotify and stream this shit (continue to stream and stream and stream if you're already about it). Happy Women's Month Y'all, from Rihanna and yours truly.
